HAMA Recognized with Award

The Hofstra American Marketing Association (HAMA) was recently awarded the 2016 Reginald Andre ’04 Endowed Award for Zarb School of Business Student Activities. This award is granted by Reginald Andre (BBA ’04) and sponsors a new program, event, or initiative.

In the fall of 2016, HAMA members (some of whom are pictured below) will be organizing a marketing pitch competition. Groups will be led by one alumni each, and together they will create a marketing plan for the different companies that are selected. A panel of marketing professionals will judge the competition and network with students and alumni. The goal of this event is to cultivate alumni connections and assist the local business community while also improving students’ presentation, communication and teamwork skills.

Quants and Traders Association: Zarb Dean’s Grad Award

The 2015-2016 Zarb Dean’s Award for Outstanding Service by a graduate student group was awarded to the Hofstra Quants and Traders Association. This School of Zarb student organization was re-launched in 2015 and now boasts more than 103 members.

Hofstra Quants and Traders Association has hosted several academic events with the goal of increasing knowledge and quantitative skills for those interested in finance. For one of their events, “The CME Trading Challenge,” the group partnered with the Hofstra Investment Banking Association and ranked 16th place out of 400 teams. Students who participated used professional software to trade a variety of products from multiple asset classes in a simulated environment. Workshops are also given by Leo Murphy of Trading Technologies and Yun Cai, president of Hofstra’s Quants and Traders Association, to teach students how to use the professional trading software and build a trading strategy. The student organization also partners with GARP (Global Association of Risk Professionals) to learn best practices from professionals in dealing with model risk.

The Zarb School’s 2016 Undergraduate Dean’s Award for Service

The Hofstra University undergraduate student organization 180 Degrees Consulting is “a branch of the world’s largest student consultancy that helps nonprofits achieve a greater social impact.” The group’s mission is “to strengthen the ability of socially conscious organizations in order to achieve high impact social outcomes through the development of innovative, practical and sustainable solutions.”

During the current 2015-2016 academic year, 180 Degrees Consulting has received two major awards: Pre-Professional Organization of the Year at Hofstra University and 2015-2016 Zarb School of Business Dean’s Award for Best Student Organization.

As the Zarb School’s Patricia Ciavarello reports:

“The undergraduate student organization 180 Degrees Consulting has been awarded the Frank G. Zarb School of Business’s 2016 Undergraduate Dean’s Award for Outstanding Service.. The group prides itself on giving students the opportunity to combine their passion for business with their passion for giving back to the community. This year, the organization consulted with seven local nonprofit organizations including Bethany House, New Ground Inc., STW Advocacy for at Risk Youth, Morrison Mentors, IPOV Agency, The Book Fairies, and Heeling Soles.”

“Students assisted these organizations with a variety of services including creating a comprehensive strategic plan, addressing recruitment and marketing issues, creating awareness, and improving financial viability. In addition to the plan proposals, students also donated their time to support their causes. At the conclusion of each semester, the organization held a final presentation night where students completed their reports to each of the organizations and present recommendations to the leadership of each nonprofit.”

As Brendan Rourke (BBA 2016) noted: “When I created 180 Degrees Consulting at Hofstra, I was looking for a unique experience to introduce students to the concept of corporate social responsibility and get them better acquainted with the constant challenges that are present in the non-profit sector. In addition, we are assisting our consultants to effectively run a business and think analytically and creatively – skills that anyone, regardless of career path, can apply to a professional setting.”

Welcome Back

Welcome back to the Spring 2016 semester at the Zarb School.

As we note on our School web page:

Zarb is among only 10 percent of business schools to earn accreditation in both Business and Accounting from AACSB International, a rigorous certification that attests to how well the Zarb School prepares its graduates for today’s global business environment. Zarb students have won awards in national competitions and successfully launched their own businesses before graduation. The Martin B. Greenberg Trading Room, equipped with 34 Bloomberg terminals, is among the largest and most technologically advanced academic facilities in the nation, where students access the same data and analytics used by financial professionals. Small classes taught by faculty dedicated to teaching and scholarship provide a supportive learning environment with close student-teacher interaction.

Students have access to a wealth of experiential learning opportunities. The Zarb Dean’s Business Scholars Program provides high-achieving students with enrichment opportunities designed to enhance their business education. Conferences, as well as undergraduate and graduate executive speaker series events, explore important themes facing global industries. Active involvement in the more than 40 Zarb student organizations and numerous community partnerships enhance leadership skills and provide students with hands-on experience at local businesses and schools.

Our network of over 30,000 successful Zarb alumni, coupled with a dedicated undergraduate and graduate career services team, provide invaluable connections leading to prestigious internships and full-time positions.
