On the 15th Anniversary of 9/11/01

It has now been 15 years since one of the worst days in American history. It is a tragedy that many of us will remember forever, and one that claimed the lives of several members of the Hofstra family (including the Zarb School). On this anniversary, it is a good time to reflect.

Each year on this date, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum has a “Tribute in Light”. This is

“an [iconic] art installation that is produced annually in New York on the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Tribute in Light illuminates the New York City sky just south of the Memorial site. On 9/11, the 9/11 Memorial plaza is open to the public from 3 p.m. to midnight for the viewing of Tribute in Light.”


 
The 9/11 Memorial & Museum also has available online multimedia information about an incredible exhibit called “Rendering the Unthinkable: Artists Respond to 9/11.” Click on the preceding link to see the summary.

If you click on this link, you can see a video clip about one of the works of art. It is very moving. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum says the following about the clip:

“Papers, letters, business forms, and personal notes flutter through the air in this film by the creative collective, Blue Man Group. Inspired by the scraps of paper that blew from the World Trade Center into the yard of their rehearsal space in Brooklyn on Sept. 11, the members of Blue Man Group wrote the song, “Exhibit 13,” featuring spoken recitations of the papers’ contents, and created the accompanying video, both named after one of the scorched pieces of paper they found. Blue Man Group members Chris Wink, Matt Goldman,and Phil Stanton are New York residents and were in various locations in Manhattan on 9/11. The performance group is based in New York.”

The Zarb School’s 2016 Undergraduate Dean’s Award for Service

The Hofstra University undergraduate student organization 180 Degrees Consulting is “a branch of the world’s largest student consultancy that helps nonprofits achieve a greater social impact.” The group’s mission is “to strengthen the ability of socially conscious organizations in order to achieve high impact social outcomes through the development of innovative, practical and sustainable solutions.”

During the current 2015-2016 academic year, 180 Degrees Consulting has received two major awards: Pre-Professional Organization of the Year at Hofstra University and 2015-2016 Zarb School of Business Dean’s Award for Best Student Organization.

As the Zarb School’s Patricia Ciavarello reports:

“The undergraduate student organization 180 Degrees Consulting has been awarded the Frank G. Zarb School of Business’s 2016 Undergraduate Dean’s Award for Outstanding Service.. The group prides itself on giving students the opportunity to combine their passion for business with their passion for giving back to the community. This year, the organization consulted with seven local nonprofit organizations including Bethany House, New Ground Inc., STW Advocacy for at Risk Youth, Morrison Mentors, IPOV Agency, The Book Fairies, and Heeling Soles.”

“Students assisted these organizations with a variety of services including creating a comprehensive strategic plan, addressing recruitment and marketing issues, creating awareness, and improving financial viability. In addition to the plan proposals, students also donated their time to support their causes. At the conclusion of each semester, the organization held a final presentation night where students completed their reports to each of the organizations and present recommendations to the leadership of each nonprofit.”

As Brendan Rourke (BBA 2016) noted: “When I created 180 Degrees Consulting at Hofstra, I was looking for a unique experience to introduce students to the concept of corporate social responsibility and get them better acquainted with the constant challenges that are present in the non-profit sector. In addition, we are assisting our consultants to effectively run a business and think analytically and creatively – skills that anyone, regardless of career path, can apply to a professional setting.”

2016 Stessin Research Award for Zarb Professor: Veronika Ilyuk

The Lawrence A. Stessin Prize for Outstanding Scholarly Publication was established in the 1984-85 academic year to reward the scholarly efforts of junior faculty at Hofstra University. Its namesake, Dr. Stessin, joined the Hofstra faculty as a Professor of Management in 1958 and served continuously until his retirement in 1973. After graduation from the Columbia University School of Journalism, he worked at the New York Times and as a columnist and associate editor of Forbes Magazine. Dr. Stessin also published in a wide range of scholarly and academic media.

During his lifetime and as part of his will, Dr. Stessin made substantial contributions to Hofstra University. His contribution to the Endowment Fund, which led to the establishment of the Stessin Prize, came with the expressed wish that the earnings from that gift be used as an incentive and reward for junior faculty who publish the results of their scholarly work.

The Zarb School of Business is pleased to recognize Dr. Veronika Ilyuk, Assistant Professor, Department of Marketing and International Business, as a 2015-16 recipient of the Stessin Award for  “The Effects of Single-Serve Packaging on Consumption Closure and Judgments of Product Efficacy,” Journal of Consumer Research, Oxford University Press, Vol. 0, 1-21 (2015).

A Graduating Zarb Student Gives Job Search Insights

In a detailed commentary about the post “Are You Ready for a Months-Long Job Interview?”, Alyson Guarino, a graduating Zarb School of Business BBA student [and President of the Student Government Association at Hofstra] wrote the following about her job search. There are many lessons for job and internship seekers here.

After interviewing with three big firms, I can speak to the experience of having “months-long” job interviews. The interview process technically started in February 2015 when I began networking with company recruiters and current employees. In May 2015, I made sure to reach out to all of the firms that I was interested in joining, with the understanding that the hiring process began in mid-August.

In October 2015, I was selected to move forward in the interviewing process. The first round of interviews for two of the three firms were phone interviews with partners of the firm where I was interviewed on leadership, and various technical case studies. The third firm interviewed me in person and I sat with a recruiter, not a partner.

The next rounds of interviews were in person with multiple partners of the firm, and were also focused mostly around case studies, strategic thinking, and problem solving. The last round of interviews included daylong events where I was introduced to the different teams I would potentially be working with, and different partners of the firm. Offers from all three firms were extended to me in early November, and they required a response by early December.

After the offer is extended, [I learned that] the interview process is still not over because the potential employee can still have questions about the firm and want to interview the firm further. The entire process for me was 9 months, but the actual interviewing process was in fact months long.

The hiring process is a complicated and long process and when someone is seeking a job, managing the multiple interviews with various firms can seem like a full time job in itself!

Even before I began seeking full-time jobs for post graduation, I applied for internships for every winter break and summer session from 2012-2016 and each time I went through a separate hiring process.

The hiring process generally includes multiple interviews (phone and in person) as well as background checks, and drug tests. It can take a long time to hear back, but I think sending follow-up messages after the interview to thank them for their time makes it easier to follow up 2 weeks later if you have not heard anything.

The most important thing at the end of an interview that I ask is when can I expect to hear back? The most general answer is, “within 2-3 weeks”. The firms are typically in the middle of interviewing other potential candidates as well, so they need the time to decide who would be the best fit. The process can be longer for someone who was not the first choice.

After the offers were extended to me from the firms mentioned above, I had a certain amount of time to respond and if I declined the offer – they then had the chance to reach out to another potential candidate to provide an offer to them. However, they cannot receive an offer until I decline one. That means that person is waiting even longer to hear back.

The entire process can be exhausting, but can also be very rewarding. Interviewing can get easier and easier, and the entire process can actually begin to feel like second nature. I recommend staying organized and finding a way to manage all communication with the various companies that you have applied to (including correspondence, names and dates). It will come in handy when a recruiter or firm finally reaches out to you weeks later with a response, and you’re not exactly sure which company is calling. Stay organized, and enjoy the process!

Zarb at 50 (1): Overview Video with President Rabinowitz

This year, Hofstra University is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its recognition of the business school as a distinct entity within the University, hence “Zarb at 50.” One of the anniversary events comprised well-attended videotaped presentations by President Rabinowitz and five distinguished alumni, followed by a reception.

Today, we are highlighting the introduction and overview video segment by President Stuart Rabinowitz, JD. His vision for the future encompasses wonderful things ahead for the Zarb School of Business. President Rabinowitz has headed Hofstra University for the past 15 years. Previously, he served as Dean of the Hofstra University School of Law (now known as the Maurice A. Dean School of Law). President Rabinowitz has held positions with a number of important government and community organizations, including the Judicial Advisory Council of the State of New York Unified Court System, County of Nassau. He currently serves as a member of the board of directors for the Long Island Association, and as co-vice chair of the Long Island Regional Economic Development Committee.
