The Growth of the Chief Digital Officer (CDO): A New Career Path

Looking for a career with a lot of long-term potential? Then, consider a career path in the management and/or marketing of the digital arena. This field is exploding across industries and around the globe.

In recent years, many companies worldwide have created a new senior job description — Chief Digital Officer (CDO). This is another entry in the alphabet soup of executive positions, which already include CEO, CFO, CMO,  and many more acronyms.

As reported by eMarketer:

“In a report released in May 2015, The CDO Club estimated that the number of CDOs worldwide would double between 2014 and 2015, from 1,000 to 2,000. This was more than four times that of the 488 registered in 2013, and almost 800% more than 2012’s 225.”

“The analysis found that the CDO role was spreading globally. While North America boasted 88% of CDOs worldwide in 2013, its share dropped to 68% last year. This was due largely to a surge in Europe, which expanded its proportion from 7% to 23%. Asia-Pacific was up slightly, from 4% to 6% of CDOs globally, while India and the Middle East rose from 1% to 2% and Latin America joined the playing field with the remaining 1%.”

The Zarb School Salutes Our Veterans on Memorial Day

In recognition of Memorial Day today, are re-issuing this post about Hofstra’s work with our military veterans.

And, if you are a veteran, be sure to check out our participation in the Yellow Ribbon Program.

We have posted before that Hofstra and the Zarb School are involved in efforts to aid veterans of the U.S. Military.

As reported by MetroMBA:

“Hofstra University has been named to the 2015 Military Friendly School List. This list includes the top 15 percent of colleges and universities that do the most to embrace members of the military, veterans, and their spouses. This is the second consecutive year Hofstra has made the list. The 2015 list of Military Friendly Schools ®, was compiled by Victory Media Inc. The list is created from a data-driven survey of more than 8,000 schools nationwide that have been approved for post-9/11 GI Bill funding. The survey scores institutions in several categories, including military support on campus, veteran graduation rates, program flexibility for military students, and military spouse policies.”

U.S News & World Report ranks Hofstra number 36 on its list of Best Colleges for Veterans: “These are the top-ranked schools in the 2015 Best Colleges rankings that participate in federal initiatives helping veterans and active-duty service members apply for, pay for and complete their degrees.”

Learning from Toastmaster International’s Speaker of the Year

As we know, verbal personal communication and public speaking are often keys to a successful career. These are also areas in which many people could strengthen their skills. One way we can do this is by studying the techniques used by the best speakers.

Toastmasters International “is a world leader in communication and leadership development. Our membership is 313,000 strong. Members improve their speaking and leadership skills by attending one of the 14,650 clubs in 126 countries that make up our global network of meeting locations.”

Each year, Toastmasters International has a World Championship of Public Speaking competition. In 2014, Sri Lanka’s Dananjaya Hettiarachchi was the winner of the competition.

Via YouTube, here is an inspirational speech from Hettiarachchi.

Jon Cooper, Tampa Bay Lightning Coach — and Zarb Alum!

This week, in the National Hockey League’s conference playoff finals, Jon Cooper is coaching the Tampa Bay Bay Lightning against the New York Rangers. So, for whom should we be rooting? 🙂

Why is this the topic of Zarb School post? Jon Cooper earned his BBA from Hofstra in 1989, and he was a 4-year member of our Men’s Lacrosse team. During his four seasons (1986-89) on the team, Cooper tallied 74 goals and added 25 assists for 99 points and was part of East Coast Conference (ECC) championship teams as a junior and a senior. At the time of his graduation, his 74 career goals ranked fifth all-time on Hofstra’s charts while the 99 points placed him ninth. He also played one season of club hockey while at Hofstra.

Zarb Online MBA Ranked 15th by the Princeton Review

As we have reported before, the Zarb School’s Online MBA Program has been ranked very highly by various sources. Now, the Princeton Review has recognized us as well.

The rankings, released last week, rate the Top 25 online MBA programs in the U.S., based on surveys of administrators, students, and graduates of online MBA programs at 80 schools. Hofstra’s online MBA program is the only one in the metropolitan New York area to make the prestigious Princeton Review list.

Launched in 2011, Hofstra’s online MBA offers two concentrations: strategic business management and strategic health care management. While the majority of the two-year program is taught online, students also participate in two, four-day campus residences, as well as a week-long global practicum designed to provide a multinational, cross-cultural experience. Previous cohorts have traveled to China, Japan, and South Africa for their global practicum.

“It is very gratifying for our faculty, administrators, and students to receive national recognition as we continue to build an online MBA program that offers all the flexibility of distance learning with the academic rigor of a Zarb business degree,” said Dr. Kaushik Sengupta, PhD, Executive Director of the online MBA program and chair of the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship.
