Tips for Students to Be More Marketable

Want to get the best job and career path possible? If you are still a student, there are several suggestions. [If you are currently working, some of these suggestions apply to you too.]

According to Tim Green, writing for The Conversation, here are 10 tips to help students become more employable:

  1. Get involved in university life — “Besides meeting new people you can learn new skills, particularly if you are involved in organizing events or take on a leadership role in the society.”
  2. Ask career services for professional advice — “Many people wait until they have nearly finished their courses, but it is better if you can work with it [career services] from your first year. It can help you choose a suitable career and advise what employers are looking for in a new recruit. Make sure you get advice on your resume and attend a session to practice your interview skills.”
  3. Keep a record — “You will have a record of your grades but you also need to be able to tell employers the skills you have developed and how you use them.”
  4. Get good grades — “While high grades aren’t everything, many organizations still ask for your GPA.”
  5. Volunteering — “Companies like employing people who have given their time for free as it shows you are prepared to help others to try to make a difference. If you don’t have time to volunteer every week you may be able to help out on a special project.”
  6. Work experience — “Many students work part-time, and gaining work experience as part of your degree really improves your employment opportunities. Whether it is a short internship or a 12-month sandwich placement you will be gaining hands-on, practical experience.”
  7. Networking — “It’s not what you know it’s who you know. Attend careers fairs and company presentations to speak to the people involved in recruiting graduates. Also create a professional social media profile. LinkedIn is the largest network though there may be others specific to the industry you want to enter.”
  8. Understand the graduate job market — “Each organization has its own approach to recruitment, so research the company and tailor your application. Timing your applications and fitting them around your exams/coursework is important.”
  9. Be flexible and mobile — “If you are prepared to move, you will increase the number of jobs for which you can apply.”
  10. Be confident — “If you get through to the later stages of interviews, remember you have earned the right to be there. The company has seen potential in you and wants to find out more. There is a job out there for everyone; you just need to be persistent to find the right one for you.

German MBA Students at the Zarb School

As part of their overseas practicum, Hochshule Bremen City University of Applied Sciences MBA students recently visited the Zarb School of Business.

Their visit began with a lecture given by Dr. Richard Hayes of the Management and Entrepreneurship Department regarding Innovation and Entrepreneurship; and this was followed by a company visit to Canon’s U.S. Headquarters where they toured the product showroom and learned about sports marketing, branding, and Canon’s corporate message.

Students then met with Dr. Paul Martorana of the Management and Entrepreneurship Department to discuss Differences in Leadership in Global Companies and with Dr. Kaushik Sengupta of the Management and Entrepreneurship Department as they examined Global Supply Chain Management. Lifetime Brands in Garden City also hosted a tour and presentations for students by the controller, traffic coordinator and E-commerce marketing support officer. Class presentations concluded the visit as Dean Herman Berliner presented participants with certificates of completion.

Hochshule Bremen City University of Applied Sciences is an exchange partner with the Zarb School that also offers Zarb students the opportunity to study in Germany for a semester or during the summer break.

Zarb at 50 (6): Presentation by Michael Venuti, Distinguished Alumnus

This year, Hofstra University is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its recognition of the business school as a distinct entity within the University, hence “Zarb at 50.” One of the anniversary events comprised well-attended videotaped presentations by President Rabinowitz and five distinguished alumni, followed by a reception.

We are making the videos available in three ways: (1) We are posting 6 separate videos over the next couple of weeks that are divided by speaker. (2) At the Hofstra YouTube channel, a special playlist with each of the separate presentations is available. Click here. (3) At the Hofstra YouTube channel is the entire 1.5 hour event in one video. Click here.

Today, we are highlighting the presentation by Mr. Michael Venuti, a Hofstra MBA in Finance, who is president of Agua Brands – the maker of Agua Active Hydration and Agua Fruit Essence. With colleague and Agua Brands co-founder Dr. Carol Dollard, Mr. Venuti is leveraging his expertise to grow Agua Brands from the ground up. The Agua Active Hydration line is powered by guarana, a natural source of caffeine. Containing as much caffeine as a cup of coffee, each bottle contains only 25 calories. In his role as chief financial officer of Glaceau from 2002-2009, Mr. Venuti helped the Vitaminwater and Smartwater brands expand to create the fastest-growing company in the history of the beverage industry. Under his leadership, the firm developed into a $1 billion brand and was ultimately acquired by Coca-Cola for $4.1 billion. At Glaceau, Mr. Venuti oversaw all financial functions. He also oversaw major contracts, including marketing initiatives, distribution contracts, and celebrity endorsement deals.
