Steven J. Freiberg: A Business Leader Educated at the Zarb School

Steven J. Freiberg, class of 1979 and 1980 with a BBA and MBA majoring in Finance, is one of the distinguished Zarb alumni featured on the School’s Web site. Below his brief bio is a YouTube video with Mr. Freiberg.

 
As Bloomberg Business summarizes Mr. Freiberg’s career: 

“Mr. Steven J. Freiberg, also known as Steve has been a Senior Advisor to The Boston Consulting Group since December 2012. Mr. Freiberg serves as Advisor to the Verisk Analytics, and [24]7. He served as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Global Consumer Group-North America at Citigroup Finance Canada Inc. He served as the Chief Executive Officer of E*TRADE Financial Corporation from April 1, 2010 to August 9, 2012.”

He has decades of experience from the financial technology (fintech) industry, including his tenure at Citigroup where he served as Co-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of its Global Consumer Group, its Global Cards Group and its North American Investment Products Division. He served as Chairman of Global Consumer Group – North America Operations at Citigroup, Inc. From 2005 to March 2008, he served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Citigroup’s Global Consumer Group N.A. He served as Co-Chairman of Global Consumer Group at Citigroup, Inc. since 2005. He served as Co-Head of the Global Consumer Group of Citigroup Inc. since August 22, 2005. From January 2009 to April 2009, he served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Citi Holdings – Global Consumer. He served as the Chief Executive Officer of Global Cards for Citigroup. Prior to that, Mr. Freiberg held positions of increasing seniority as a Management Associate and held multiple positions in Marketing, Business Planning, Management Sciences and Finance with Citigroup’s predecessor companies and affiliates since joining Citigroup’s Card Products Division in 1980. He served as Chief Financial Officer of Citigroup since 1985. In August 1997, he returned to the Credit Card Division and assumed responsibility for several major Strategic Business Groups which were key elements driving the significant turnaround of Citi Cards N.A. He served as the Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Citi Cards N.A. from May 2000 to 2005. His broad experience encompasses senior leadership roles with Citibank Financial Account, Citigroup’s early entry into online banking; CitiCorp. Investment Services (CIS); and, CitiCorp. Insurance Group. From September 2005 to January 2010, he served as Executive Vice President of Citibank N.A. Mr. Freiberg served as the Chief Financial & Operating Officer of Citibank Financial Account (CFA), Citigroup’s early entry into online banking. In 1992, Mr. Freiberg joined a corporate-wide task force where he was part of a team which developed Citicorp’s five-year Global Consumer Strategic Plan. When this assignment ended, he moved to Florida to run distribution for the Florida Consumer Bank. From 1993 to 1995, the Florida bank’s performance improved significantly and the franchise turned profitable for the first time in Citicorp’s 10-year ownership. “

“He joined the former U.S. region board of MasterCard in January 2001 and served as the Chairman of MasterCard’s U.S. region board from 2004 to May 2006. Mr. Freiberg served as Chairman of the Board of Citigroup, Inc. He served as an Interim Chairman of E*TRADE Financial Corporation from May 2011 to January 27, 2012. He has been a Director of OANDA Corporation since January 2015.”

“He has been Independent Director of Regional Management Corp. since July 02, 2014. He has been a Director of MasterCard Worldwide, Inc. and Mastercard Incorporated (MasterCard International Inc.) since September 2006. He served as a Director of Citi Cards NA. He served on the board of directors of several of Citigroup’s affiliates including, Citibank N.A., CitiCorp. Credit Services Inc., CitiCorp. Investment  Services, CitiCorp. Insurance Group, Citibank Trust N.A., Citibank FSB, Citigroup Foundation and the MasterCard U.S. Advisory Board (as chair). He serves on the board of trustees of the March of Dimes and Hofstra University and the Leadership Council for New York City Habitat for Humanity. Mr. Freiberg serves as a Director of Direct Marketing Association, the Financial Services Roundtable, the DMA Board and the NYU Management Decision Laboratory. He served as a Director of Upromise, Inc. He served as Director of E*TRADE Financial Corporation from April 1, 2010 to August 9, 2012. He holds NASD Securities licenses 7, 24, and 63. Mr. Freiberg holds a BBA degree in Finance as well as an MBA in Finance from Hofstra University.”
